Traditionally, oud picks were made from the quill of an eagle feather (very rare and illegal nowadays) or sea-turtle shell (also called tortoise shell, also illegal). Horn is also used, but wears quite quickly. Various plastics are now the norm and are very acceptable, used by professionals and casual players alike.

PICK BLANKS

Talonite, the latest pick material from Khalaf Oud Luthiery. This material is relatively soft and flexible, translucent and readily worked with abrasives and scrapers. Compared to celluloid, its a bit warmer. Comparitively, not quite as "crisp" or "brittle" sounding as our Mizrite material. It's good for traditional playing where a softer sound is desired.

4 Talonite pick blanks:

An exciting pick material made from a high-tech polymer resin. Flexible, robust, warm. Able to take a very thin profile and hold up to daily use. Easy to work and shape. Economical. Much more wear-resistant than nylon, won't crack or break like celluloid or PVC. Hands-down, the ideal all-around risha and mizrab material.
Translucent white.
